In^cie this Issue The real meaning behind the green LAURA PHILLIPS Staff Writer For thousands of years, St. Patrick’s Day lias been celebrated around the world. It is the one day of the year where every one gets the chance to w'ear green and show liis or her Irish pride no matter what religion ornationalit)'. But many do not know why we celebrate tliis month tor, shamrocks and lq> rechauns and why we wear green every' March 17. Althougli some are unaw'are of the histor>' of the lioliday, plenty know' what the holidiiy means to them. For many it is a day to party and in dulge them.selves in green lx«r. For others, it is a day to enjoy a proper Irish meal of com txxjf and cabbage. I will admit I do enjoy the fes- tiveness of this holiday and will- in^ypartiikeinthe green been But beinglrish myself, the history of this holiday has been drilled in my head since a child and it is im portant to know the reasons why we cel ebrate St. Patrick this month. The origiiis of St. Patrick are sur rounded by mystery ;uid Iblklore. Many of the details of St Patrick, the individual are up for debate such as the story of him chas- ingsnakestxitoflrelandandusingtheshiim- rockleaf as .symbolism for the Holy Trinity. But there is a real story behind the legends. St. Patrick, (wh(«e real name was maew’y'n) w'as bom in about A.D. 380. in England. Kidnapped as child, St. Patrick was taken to Ireland to herd sheep. After being in slavery for 6 y aiis. he then escaped to France where he studied religion. After becoming a priest Patrick returned to Ireland where he built an abun dance of churches and schot)ls to spread GitholicLsm, Patrick died on March 17,461, and was 1,'iter ordained a saint for converting the people of Ireland to Christianity. That Lsbasically the stoi\of St P;itrick in a nutshell. As to the reiison why we wear green, some believe it is to honor Ireland, the Emerald Isle. It is also to honor an an cient Irish custom. Actx)rding to Irish folk lore, the people of Ireland bumed branches with green leaves during March, which w'as suppc»ed to make the l;ind fertile and green.
